A big thank you must go out to everyone that turned up to our open evening last night (29th September). We had far more turn up then expected!

Unfortunately it would be imossible for us to offer all of you a place at Warwick Open Award due to staff to pupil ratios.

We will be sifting through the list and sending out emails later this week.

Good Luck and we look forward to seeing you!

Looking forward to the start of a new term and can't wait to get things underway.

We are recruiting new groups - a group of friends would be ideal, aged between 14 and 25!

Our open eveing is Tuesday 29th September, if you fancy getting involved then pop down and see what we get up to!

Jennie steps down as Leader In Charge

As of 28th February 2009 Jennie decided to step down as Leader In Charge at Warwick Open Award due to other work and social commitments.

We will of course miss her, but know she won't be able to stay away for too long.

She'll be around to help us on expeditions and on a Tuesday evening as much as possible.

Youngsters urged to join awards scheme

YOUNG people are being urged to embark on an adventure by signing up to a Duke of Edinburgh award scheme running in Warwick.

The group, aged aged 14 to 24, meets on Tuesday evenings – between 7.30pm and 9.30pm at Coten End Youth Centre - to be taught team-work skills, cooking on

a lightweight back packing cooker, the country code and land laws, how to use a compass, maps and tents and all other skills needed to complete expeditions.

Group leader Adam Eagles said: “We are just beginning our second year running a Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme in Warwick but are finding it difficult to

recruit new youngsters. “I think the problem is that they don’t know we are here.”

The scheme is open to anyone aged between 14 and 24 at one of three progressive levels which, when successfully completed, lead to a Bronze, Silver or

Gold Award.

With assistance from adult leaders, participants select and set objectives in four sections - volunteering, physical activity, skills and expedition, with an

additional fifth section – residential – at Gold level which involves living and working away from home for a period of time.

A spokesperson for the Warwick group added: “From the first day to the last it’s a real adventure. Every section gives you something different - that’s the fun of it.

“People will enjoy loads of new experiences, discover talents you never thought you had, challenge yourself and meet loads of people just like you.

“An award will give you skills, confidence and a view on life that everyone is looking for, from employers to colleges and universities, plus you’ll be fitter and healthier, make new friends and have memories to last you a lifetime.”

Team work, self-sufficiency and coping with the outdoors are some of the skills a group of Warwick youngsters are learning.
Led by adult volunteers, members of the Warwick Duke of Edinburgh Award group meet on Tuesday evenings. The aim is to help teenagers achieve the bronze, silver and gold sections of the scheme.

Participants must undertake voluntary work in the community, take up a physical activity such as sport or dance and a skill such as cookery, art or music, as well as plan, train for and complete a camping and walking expedition in the UK or abroad.

Leader of the Warwick group, Adam Eagles, said: "Every section gives you something different - that's the fun of it. Anyone who takes part will enjoy loads of new experiences, discover talents they never thought they had, challenge themselves and meet loads of people.

"Achieving the award gives you skills, confidence and a view on life that everyone is looking for, from employers to colleges and universities. Plus you’ll make a difference to other people’s lives and your community, be fitter and healthier, make new friends and have memories to last you a lifetime."

Anyone interested in taking part is invited to join the group at Coten End Youth Centre in Coten End on Tuesdays from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Visit www.warwickopenaward.co.uk or email warwickopenaward@yahoo.co.uk
